Life my age is too tiring
Can’t keep with that antsy race
Lately I’ve been admiring
Folks in the autumn of age
Unchained from goals I can stretch my feet
Free from the stories so I can read them
I aim to retire a little early, after all
If I collected a pension
I wouldn’t play bingo or those endless card games
I’d do the things that burn to do right now
That get squeezed out of way
I’d double my listening, write my greatest songs
Same with reading and writing, traveling, philosophizing
I aim to retire a little early, that’s all
I don’t aim to be famous
To count the marks that I’ve left on the world
Leave it to others to scribble
On their resume grave
I feel the light on the back of my neck
Where it meets the bones that grow shields to protect my old soul
I aim to retire a little early after all
I aim to retire a little early after all
